Sony Would Need to Shrink Investment on PS5 AAA Titles If They Release on PS Plus

Sony Interactive Entertainment will launch its new PlayStation Plus service in Asia on May 23, in Japan on June 1, in the Americas on June 13, and in Europe on June 22. It will be available in three tiers, however, none of them will provide games on day one.
Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki in the company's fiscal year 2021 investor call said if Sony were to release AAA PlayStation 5 titles on PlayStation Plus they would need to shrink the investment in said games.

Sony Interactive Entertainment in its fiscal year 2021 investor call revealed it is investing another $300 million in its first-party studios and plans to release games on more than one platform.
"We plan to increase software development expenses aimed at strengthening first-party software at our existing studios by approximately ¥40 billion ," said Sony in the investor call.
"Going forward we aim to grow the game business by strengthening our first-party software and deploying that software on multiple platforms."

FIFA has announced that for the first time, it will launch a new football game developed with third-party studios and publishers, and several non-simulation titles are already in production. The body noted in the release that it has granted an extension to EA Sports for the simulation football category only, which will allow the release of FIFA 23 later this year. FIFA also said it is engaging with publishers, studios, and investors on the development of a major new simulation football title for 2024.

Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki has once again confirmed PlayStation's stance on releasing new AAA first-party games into the revamped PS Plus day one. Totoki did not want to speak on Xbox's strategy with Game Pass but said that putting new PlayStation exclusives on PS Plus could reduce the overall quality of the games.
